There is a growing trend amongst travellers to take their furry or feathered friends along for their next holiday. Be it a bird, a dog, a cat, a horse or even a lizard; many people are taking their much-loved pets with them.

 

Of course, there is a lot to think about before taking your pet away, and all the appropriate arrangements should be made before booking your holiday.

Plan ahead

 

Travelling with pets means you need to do a bit of forward planning. Book accommodation that is pet friendly and secure for your furry friend.

 

If you are on a road trip, you will need to plan stops and breaks for your pets. Also, remember not to leave your pet in the car on their own for an extended period if the weather is hot.

 

You may also need to ensure that you plan out your pet’s meals and take a portable water bowl so your dog can have a drink on the fly.

 

Camping with dogs

 

Camping with your dog can be a lot of fun for the whole family, who doesn’t love being able to play with their dog whilst on holiday.

 

Just ensure that you check where you can camp with your dog; many national parks don’t allow dogs.

 

You also need to ensure that you have a way to secure your pet at your campsite – travel with a pet crate or a lead you can tie to something for your dog.

 

First Aid for Pets

 

The safety of your pet should also be considered before departing on holiday. You should prepare an appropriate first aid kit, be knowledgeable on the various Australian insects/creatures your pet may come into contact with – this allows you to approach an emergency calmly.

 

Visit the vet

 

Ensure that your pet is all up to date with vaccinations, especially, and look at the area you are heading to see if there is anything extra that you need to add to the mix.
