Sushi making with kids

Looking to make interesting things to feed the kidlets, that they will both enjoy and are fun to get them involved in the cooking process?

How about trying some do it yourself sushi rolls. Fun to make and can even be done on the holidays while staying in one of our family cabins, or even by the campfire.

Here is a great do it yourself sushi recipe.

What you’ll need:

  • 200 grams of sushi rice
  • 375ml of cups water
  • 3 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 6 nori sheets
  • Bamboo mat
  • Carrot sticks
  • Cucumber sticks
  • Cooked chicken/Canned tuna/prawns/etc
  • Avocado slices

Method:

Place sushi rice and water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave it aside for 15 min.

When the rice cools, sprinkle vinegar and sugar. Stir thoroughly.

Cut the nori sheet in half. Place it shiny part upside down and put some rice on it. Press down with fingers to a depth of 0.5 cm.

Arrange the fillings on top of the rice in a line. Roll the nori strips and cook into six or eight pieces using a sharp knife.

Cover and refrigerate for 60 minutes, so that the sushi softens.
